6 Things to do on a Weekend Getaway in Kuala Kubu Bharu
As city folks, my girlfriend and I love to go to Kuala Kubu Bharu, or fondly known as KKB by the locals. Re-built after it was destroyed by flood in the 18th century, the town has become our favourite weekend getaway destination for its natural appeal. We enjoy the fresh air, scenic views, and adventurous nature activities in this small town at the foothill of Fraser’s Hill. Located about an hour’s car ride away from Kuala Lumpur , we frequent ourselves to KKB and would like to share some of our favourite things to do here.
Exploring the Attractions of Kuala Kubu Bharu
1) Sungai Selangor Dam – Our source of water
Have you seen a dam before? If you haven’t, you should definitely pull over the roadside to catch the breathtaking view of the Sungai Selangor dam which is just 5 km away from KKB. The Sungai Selangor dam can cover up to 600 acres when at full supply capacity. The dam which supplies water to most of us in Klang Valley reminds us of the El Nino incident that caused low rainfall and drastic drop of water in the dam. If you do not see much growths at the edge of the dam, this indicates that the water level was high. I reckon taking a jump shot here!

2) Sungai Chilling Waterfall – River-crossing adventure
If you are up for an adventure, you should challenge yourself for to do river-crossing. The jungle trail toward the waterfall is clear and straightforward, but to reach to the waterfall you need to be prepared to cross six rivers. Certain rivers may be challenging to pass due to sweeping current and high water level, especially during rainy season. But we love challenges! We recommend you to go in a large group with a safety rope. All in all, remember to have fun!
3) Bukit Kutu – Best place to hike
Bukit Kutu or Kutu Hill offers two trail options for hikers: the easy trail by the foothill (30 – 45 minutes to complete), or the adventurous trail (three hours to get to 1053 metre high peak). You will know that you are on the second path once you have crossed three rivers and spotted a signboard that says “Hutan Simpanan Kekal” (forest reserve). Remember to apply for a hiking permit which costs only RM5 before embarking your journey here. There are forestry officers doing patrol regularly — we met one during our last visit! Be prepared to be put in awe by the panoramic view of clouds, valleys and mountains when you reach the summit!
4) Pasar Awam Kuala Kubu Bharu – Know the locals
If you arrive KKB in the morning with a hungry stomach, we would recommend you to savour some local delicacies at the only morning market in town called Pasar Awam Kuala Kubu Bharu. Besides, morning market is also a great place for you to be around the locals to understand the culture and lifestyle.
5) The Arts in this Old Town
Besides being the natural gateway, KKB also houses plenty of historical buildings and murals. The Clock Tower is a famous KKB landmark situated on the hilltop overlooking KKB town. The tower was built in 1931 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
After visiting the landmark, walk over to Jalan Merdeka which is just a stone’s throw away from the Clock Tower to see the mural paintings on the buildings. The locals told us, there is an annual art festival that features many artists around the world. Being a frequent traveller, this is the first time we experience a town with nature, art and human interaction.
6) Hock Choon Kee – Famous Ulu Yam Loh Mee
Loh Mee may not be for everyone as its dark brown gravy can be quite intimidating for many people. Having grown up with loh mee, however, I have always loved this dish. Located near KKB, Kedai Kopi & Makanan Hock Choon Kee is famous for loh mee. It has been operating for three generations, and the quality of the food has always been top-notch. They are also renowned for their fried fish cake that is chewy inside with slightly crispy exterior. On weekends, the restaurant is usually packed with people, so better get your seats quick!

Recommended Hotels to Stay in Kuala Kubu Bharu
For us, our best accommodation is our tent! We love staying close to nature.
But if you are not fancy to set up your own tent, we recommend the two hotels below for a simple night stay at Hotel Sahara Kuala Kubu Bharu. Hotel Sahara provides cosy rooms with affordable price if you just want to get a place to sleep. WiFi is available, and it’s about half an hour to Fraser Hill.
KKB is probably one of the most laid-back cities in Malaysia, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing for you to do in KKB. KKB has a different charm from other big cities in Malaysia. If you need some quiet time and a slower pace of life, KKB will be a perfect weekend getaway for you!
